Many SMEs still need to improve online credibility

The importance of your credibility online has never been higher, especially for small businesses that have not established a known brand. For new businesses getting it right can mean the difference between total failure or reaping high profits by winning that new big contract.
The online identity of a business is one of the most import factors a prospective new customer will use. Many new businesses now appear to use free services to promote their trade, and to gain extra exposure. This in many instances is fine, but the main contact should always be the business' own website/email which uses the business' own domain name. Consider the two marketeers below:

The example on the right has far superior credibility as the company is incorporated (Limited) and uses its own domain name for the contact email address and website. Whereas the one on the left uses a free email service and facebook as their website contact. There is of course a function for social media sites, and the use of, but to use facebook/twitter/etc... as your main website contact is not a good business decision and will not be percieved in the business world as acceptable. Your actual contact address is also important.
On your website you must have a real bricks and mortar address, a place where a customer can contact you/your company if all else fails. This should be clearly shown along with a telephone number, and links to the accounts on social media websites. If you are storing client data then you should be using SSL (to allow for a secure connection to your website) where such data is entered or modified by your clients.
Once you have your own domain name for email and website, continuity of use is important. Ensure your correspondence is via the proper email address when replying rather than reverting to a free email account.
